Literature for the Masses: The English Literature Degree in 2004

After the twenty-year expansion of the university system, what claim can still be made for the English Literature degree as a ‘discipline’? What actually goes on in a contemporary seminar? This article reflects on three real-life encounters with students reading Shakespeare, Bunyan and Solzhenitsyn.
